Specifying file type
Is it possible to specify the file type to be downloaded, such as only .avi or only .mp4?

No, it's not possible. You can specify the quality, if you choose SD then TVShows will mostly download .mp4 files, and if you choose HD it will mostly download .mkv files. Those are the standard used by the most popular episode uploaders.
