.mp4 over .avi files (part deux)
Hi Cristina,
I was surprised with your prompt answer, I'm not able to re-open the conversation, so here's a new one with lots of stuff to talk about.
I want to start by saying that i really appreciate what you guys have been doing for the "web tv community". I download quite a few shows, and it's so nice to finally have an easy and well designed interface to prepare all your downloads in combination with your torrent client without much fuzz. From 3mule to torrents, we've all come a long way and what you guys have done with this app is truly fantastic for the enhancement of that natural evolution. It's like you asked people what they wanted, and then you did the craziest thing ever, you actually gave them EXACTLY what they wanted! Truthfully, i thank you :)
Regarding the .mp4 over .avi files. I just don't understand your choice there guys.. It's an obvious statement to say that you enjoy torrents and TV Shows, Along those lines, when were .mp4 video files ever considered of better quality than .avi files in computing history?
I personally would never consider downloading .mp4 over .avi files when both are available on the web. And before you say that is my opinion, please ask around what users think about it? Over the years i only remember downloading .mp4 files when it's rare documentary that you cannot find in any other format anyways..
To not have .avi files available on TVShows as you have .mp4 files and also the choice to have them in HD is quite a limited option! How can you possibly make that decision when you never had .mp4 files available for download and still not consult with major users??? Such decision sounds fascist at best..
It seems you actually changed the ripper sources you get the files from, like ettv? Who the heck is ettv?? The usual rippers continue posting the usual format in .avi 350Mb files through PirateBay, Demonoid and all the others. I guess i could just choose another source for the shows i download with TVShows, which will be some work. Or i'll have to download them manually and just use TVShows for when they come out, as to avoid having to check schedules like old times.. But it's a little sad to have to do either of them things.
Lately i've been getting some massive files in HD 1080pix (some having up to 2 Gb) when i haven't even ticked the box for it on the show. In fact, i haven't ticked that box for any of my shows. Also, episodes seem to not always be added to my torrent client when they actually come out in eztv and others.. for some there seems to be a gap of over 16 hours sometimes.
Most of the TV shows appear to now have very little number of past episodes when viewing the show's details. It used to show at least 3 years of episodes back in time and you could easily start downloading from any of them. Is this in correlation with changing the sources? or is it maybe unfortunate problems with your servers?
I read you guys are working on the 3rd version, and this from scratch. It must be exciting times for you guys! I just hope you can revoke your decision and take into consideration .avi files again.
Alright then, i wish you all the best for the work you are doing and gracefully thank you again for everything you have done thus far.
Adriano

Hi Adriano,
We completely depend on what the release groups want to release, if we want to automatize the process it would be very difficult for us to guess the format of the file, since we only have the title. In reality, we didn't change anything, the code is exactly the same, the ones that changed their releases were EZTV and others. You will have the same problem if you visit their front page:

If you want to download .avi files, look for an uploader in The Pirate Bay (if you can find it) and subscribe to a custom RSS:

About the mkv issue: we had the problem that TVShows though that these mp4 files were HD, so it didn't find any "SD" file. Update your copy of TVShows to get the fix for that :) By the way, by default TVShows waits 18 hours for the right format to appears, after that it downloads the available one because it seems better to download the episode rather than not downloading anything at all.
Also, this february we had a lot of problems with our server, and The Pirate Bay switched to magnets, so it hasn't been a "stable" month.
Cheers!
