TV Shows no longer works for me

When I try an open the preference pane I get two errors with identical messages. (one has the TV shows icon and the other has the System preferences icon). Once I dismiss the messages the pane opens, but without my list and I cannot create a new list.

The message is:
The file couldn't be opened because you don't have permission to view it.
To view or change permissions, select the item in the Finder and chose File > Get Info.

Reinstalling the preference pane did not help.
I can find no permission errors on the drive and everything in my account looks correct.

Any idea what file(s) it is complaining about?

Thanks

    Hi Noah,

Try these on a terminal window:

    • chmod 755 ~/Library/LaunchAgents/
    • chmod 644 ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.victorpimentel.TVShowsHelper.plist

If you get an error, try this to stop the background process:

    • launchctl unload ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.victorpimentel.TVShowsHelper.plist

Then run the two commands above, then launch the background process again:

    • launchctl load ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.victorpimentel.TVShowsHelper.plist

    Let me know the results.

So I ran the chmod commands (needed to use sudo to execute) it made no difference.

I decided to try unloading first and when I did I got the following error:

    $sudo launchctl unload ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.victorpimentel.TVShowsHelper.plist
launchctl: Dubious ownership on file (skipping): /Users/{me}/Library/LaunchAgents/com.victorpimentel.TVShowsHelper.plist
    nothing found to unload

    So I checked the ownership:
    ls -larth /Users/{me}/Library/LaunchAgents/com.victorpimentel.TVShowsHelper.plist
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 {me} wheel 551B 26 Jun 17:55 /Users/{me}/Library/LaunchAgents/com.victorpimentel.TVShowsHelper.plist

    Hi Noah,

Permissions seem to be fine... but the background process wasn't running when you tried to stop it. If you load it (last command) does it give you any error?

If the issue persists, I can only advise you to do a clean install. You said you already did that, did you follow these steps? (steps 2 through 4 are crucial for a clean uninstall)

    1. Backup the folder ~/Library/Application Support/TVShows 2/ (subscriptions) and the file ~/Library/Preferences/com.victorpimentel.TVShows2.plist (preferences)
    2. Empty the trash, if it isn't empty.
    3. Go to the About tab, click the uninstall button.
    4. Open System Preferences (not TVShows PrefPane), if the PrefPane is still here, right click it and remove it.
    5. Download the latest version from our website, and install it (if prompted, select "only for this user").
    6. If everything works, copy the backup of your subscriptions into the Application Support folder and the .plist file to the Preferences folder.

Anyway, I will add this to the developer queue so he can take a look when he can.

    Hi Cristina,

I think the issue was with my OS install . I started experiencing other
issues as well that seemed related to file permissions.

In the then end I reformatted and reinstalled my OS. I am in the process of
restoring settings and files from backups. I will let you know if the issue
presents once I have restored TV shows.

    Thanks for your help

    Noah
